4 Tips for A Smoother Dental Checkup

It’s finally that time of the year again; you’re due back at your dentist’s office for one of your biannual checkups! This is a very important part of maintaining a bright and healthy smile and preventing serious oral health problems from developing, as your dentist can provide a detailed level of care that few others are capable of. However, dental exams aren’t always straightforward, and you sometimes don’t know what to expect. But here are four tips to help ensure that no matter what happens, things go smoothly.

1. Brush & Floss Beforehand

It’s sometimes helpful to lightly clean your teeth by brushing and flossing before visiting your dentist, especially if you’ve eaten prior to the appointment. This can reduce the amount of food particles and debris on your teeth, making issues like tartar buildup or gum inflammation easier for your dentist to spot. But remember, brushing beforehand won’t mask signs of poor oral hygiene!

2. Show Up on Time

This is just a good rule of thumb in general, but showing up on time goes a long way, especially when it’s for a dental appointment. Your dentist is a very busy person and has many other patients to see, so their time is valuable. Showing up on time will show your dentist that you respect their time and appreciate them seeing you. Not to mention, your promptness will ensure that your dentist can spend an adequate amount of time with your smile. Many patients who show up early for dental visits also experience less dental-related anxiety!

3. Ask Questions While You’re There

Your dentist is an expert about oral healthcare and is knowledgeable about many subjects, so this is a great time to mention any issues or ask any questions related to your mouth. Be as honest and informative as possible to help your dentist out here; there’s no reason to lie or hide anything! You should also inform your dentist if you’re experiencing any dental-related anxiety.

4. Know Your Budget

Dental work can be pretty stressful for some people, and the financial burden often doesn’t make things easier. That said, consider figuring out your budget beforehand and save yourself a headache after your appointment. If you have dental insurance benefits, be mindful of what treatment is covered and what you’ll have to pay out of pocket. Many plans and dental offices offer some flexibility when it comes to payment, so you will likely find a way to make it work.

Dental appointments shouldn’t be a source of stress in your life—rather, they should be something you feel good about, given all the benefits that visiting the dentist has to offer. That said, knowing what to expect going into your appointment and following these tips can ensure that things go as smoothly as possible.
